Is an iPad worth the money for designers?

Huion No Screen Graphics Tablet vs iPad Pro

When I first started out designing greetings cards and gifts, I used an entry level Huion drawing pad without a screen connected to my PC, along with free open-source design software. I used it for countless hours over the space of a few years, at first as a hobby and then for my business. Once I gave birth to my second child, I soon realised I couldn’t be sat at my desk any longer as I needed eyes in the back of my head, and something I could easily pick up and put down again in an instant. After a lot of thought and research I took the plunge and invested in an iPad Pro and I fell in love!

Huion Tablet Pros

  • Cheap at around £50 to £60 for the entry level
  • Doesn’t need charging so always ready to use (with self-charging stylus)
  • Great to use a hobbyist or to test out selling digital art
  • Can be better for your posture as you’re sat looking straight ahead at a screen

Huion Tablet Cons

  • Not portable unless connected to a laptop/tablet
  • Ideally needs to be used at a table or desk
  • Drawing on a pad and looking at a screen can be hard to master as you need good hand eye co-ordination

iPad Pros

  • Drawing straight onto a screen just like on a piece of paper
  • Portable, I love drawing on my knee whilst watching TV, sat on the sofa or in bed
  • Easy to pick up and put down which is great for working when you have young children
  • Procreate software is amazing for just £10 from Apple

iPad Cons

  • Expensive to buy
  • Needs charging regularly, I have to charge mine daily
  • Stylus replacement tips are expensive
  • Can encourage bad posture

Conclusion

If you’re just starting out with digital art and you have a desktop PC, Apple Mac or a laptop etc, I would personally go with a cheaper no screen graphics tablet such as a Huion or Wacom no screen drawing tablet. Then once you’re comfortable with digital art, and you know you want to continue with it, then seriously think about investing in an Ipad.

However, if you don’t already have a PC or something to connect into then you may as well go straight for the Ipad, because I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
